    Read. Think. Write. Repeat—only instead of just listening to lectures and whipping up a five-paragraph response, have the chance to engage with texts and pursue your own ideas.


    It’s true that fifteen years from now you might not remember the finer
    details of ‘Catcher in the Rye’, but it’s also true that skills integral to
    success, such as written/verbal communication, critical thinking,
    thoughtful analysis and reading between the lines, are primarily taught in English class. This 13-week long course examines texts from the American literary canon with the goal of building these skills through seminar-style discussions and writing assignments that culminate in a final,
    individually-directed thesis paper.

    Weekly reading assignments (the text, approximately 20-70 pages, and
    supplementary materials such as scholarly criticism, cultural background, discussion questions, etc) will be accompanied by ‘reflections’ (writing assignments that encourage the student to generate initial critical thoughts towards the text), in-class discussions, and responses (writing assignments that encourage more structured analyses and written arguments about the text). Because the onus is on the student to make the most of
    this class (including coming to the live class prepared to shape and
    contribute to the discussion), this course is recommended for older high school students, although younger students may have the option to audit. We ask that students’ writing be at the level where they are already able to construct an argument about a text and support it with quotes. If there are

    Description:

    Are you ready to throw out all the rules and try something new? Together
    we will explore the unusual, the mysterious, and the unbelievable.
    However, we will also dive deep into the normal, everyday, and the dull.
    Poetry provides writers an outlet to express thoughts in unconventional
    ways. This year’s class will focus on the creative side of writing. We
    will learn about different forms of poetry, create and share our poems, use
    writing prompts, explore poetry sites, and learn about the poets of the
    past and present. This class will include a few projects, but grading will
    primarily be based on participation.

    The age group differs on your reading level and comprehension. If you are
    not high school aged, but can read classical books, comprehend them, and
    have fun, then by all means join. It's a fun educational book club, not a class.

    Description:

    This year, our focus will be myths, legends, and fairy tales from around
    the world. Unlike today's modernized version of fairy tales and myths,
    most of the old stories were teaching tools; many of which had darker
    twists. Some of the tales will be from Norse, Greek, and Romans mythology.
    Others will stem from Asia, Russia, and parts of Europe, as well as myths
    from the Americas.

    Welcome, nerds and geeks alike!
    The Doomed Readers' Guild Without A Cool Acronym (hereafter TDRGWACA), taught by the awesome and epic Dillon Withers (aka Squid), Ryan (aka Melkor), and Hannah Barry (aka The Mysterious Cat Of Doom), is a book club, intended more or less for modern books.
    We will be voting on what to read a few weeks in, once we've finished the books that WE ABSOLUTELY MUST READ *THUNDER*, so scribble down a list of your favourite books (just make sure you can read your own handwriting)!
    TDRGWACA is generally targeted toward 10 - 1000, but anyone older or younger who feels they can handle it is welcome to attend! The pace is about 200 pages a week -- or 40 pages per day, not counting the day we meet or Sunday -- but that's just kind of a guesstimation number and we can always adjust. (I know, I know, I know -- that's a lot. But with thanks to Google for average teen reading rates, average word count per page, and a squick of calculating, it's about an hour of reading a day, Sunday and Saturday aside. Just a heads-up.)
    We will have a set list of books we definitely want to read, and will vote on the rest later in the school year. Suggestions for the set list are always welcome. The following is still in progress and is subject to change, at least until the course starts:
