A Brief History of Science

Most lessons will have just one lesson, but this first lesson has more content than other modules, so we have broken the lessons up into 4 parts. Watch each part and then do the lesson quiz in the course page. Take a break of at least 15 minutes or even a few days and then do the next lesson until you have completed all four.

Lesson 1: Ancients to 1000 AD

Learn about ancient Egyptian and Greek doctors, scientists, and philosophers who made important contributions to the advancement of science up through 1000AD. People that you will learn about include Imhotep, Thales, Pythagoras, Democritus, Diogenes, Aristotle, Archimedes, and Ptolemy.

Scientific Inquiry

In this lesson you will explore the scientific method and learn how a single counter-example can destroy theories and laws that have been held for centuries. The focus is to encourage students to realize that science is not infallible and that "The first principle is that you must not fool yourself and you are the easiest person to fool" as Richard Feynman once said. The scientific method is a good tool to try to stay objective as we seek to find how and why things work the way they do. We will also explore frauds in science and more often frauds about science that happen in social media: how and why they happen and how you can be a good fraud-detective.

Classifying Life

Humans have amassed a huge amount of information about living things. If you were to go to a library looking for information about a very specific subject, you can be grateful for the Dewey Decimal System which helps the staff to keep things orderly and findable. That is basically what the classification system does. It helps scientists keep their data organized. It occasionally gets some modifications here and there over time, but it is foundational to the life sciences to keep order in the 'library of life'.
